If there is any downside of the really marvelous technological device, the iPhone, it is the inability of the iPhone and the iPhone 3G to have free and custom ring tones.  Apple, the creator, provides you with a couple of options in this regard.  You can either pay $0.99 for a ring tone with the duration of thirty minutes or select one of the standard ring tones that are provided by them.

Many users however do not like either of the options.  Moreover such options are contrary to the claims made by Apple that your experience with iPhone would be smooth and personalized.  The options can provide neither and you do not feel at home at all with the options. Good news for you is that there are multiple methods using which you can download your favorite ring tones on your iPhone.  You can also get the free ring tones from the Internet or such other sources to download Free iPhone Ringtones.

Conversely you can deploy certain other methods that could pay you handsome dividends.  Some such methods are SSH or File Transfer and Send song.  In the former you drop any of the MP3, AAC, M4R and such other files in the in built Library or the ring tones directory available there.  In the later you can pick up songs of your choice from the iPod and thereafter you can move in to the ring tone section of the device.  You can install them with App Tapp.
On the other hand it will also be possible for you to manually place the AAC files in to the correct iTunes ring tones folders.  It also works with purchased songs provided they are converted into the right .aac format.  You can also convert songs to m4r format and just drop them in the iTunes ring tone folder.  Of course you cannot convert the purchased songs of iTune as they are DRM protected.
